R.I.P. Charlie Jones

Most today are mourning the death of NBC News' reporter/commentator Tim Russert...But I would like to pay tribute to another sad death in the world of sports announcers. Of course...Jim McKay was a big one a few days back...but this guy was also one of my favorites.

Charlie Jones died Thursday of a heart attack. He was 77. Jones started at ABC in 1960 broadcasting American Football League games.
In 1965, he moved to NBC, continuing to broadcast the AFL and later the National Football League. He would work NFL games until 1997, when NBC lost their NFL broadcasting rights to CBS.

I will most remember him announcing NFL games(usually the Raiders or a west coast game on NBC)and the classic calls he had in the 1987 Fiesta Bowl national championship loss by the Miami Hurricanes vs Penn State.

Dick Ebersol, the Chairman of NBC Universal Sports & Olympics...released this statement.

"All of us at NBC are saddened at the passing of one of the great pioneers of NBC Sports. His work in particular on the NFL, golf and the Olympics left a lasting legacy."

R.I.P. Charlie Jones...I will always have great memories of you with Merlin Olson and Todd Christenson on those late Sunday afternoon doubleheaders featuring a California or west coast team.

Now, why the heck is Natalie Portman(for those that don't know...she is an actress...most famous for her portrayal of Padme Amidala in the latest "Star Wars" trilogy)....why the heck is Natalie Portman dating "Non"...Zod's henchman? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non_%28DC_comics%29
